Argentina addresses rising youth addictions to alcohol and online gambling

Research and local initiatives in Argentina are highlighting the rise of problematic consumption among youth, specifically noting that addictions now extend beyond substances to include online gambling, mobile phone use, and compulsive shopping.

In Buenos Aires, a study conducted by secondary students identified alcohol consumption as a major concern due to its social normalization. The research, presented to the city legislature, proposed improvements in budget control, education, and advertising regulation. Findings indicated that 13% of respondents view addiction as an escape from mental health issues, and the City Audit General has noted a lack of specialized care centers for youth and women.

In Ituzaingó, the municipal government and SEDRONAR held a collaborative workshop to analyze local addiction trends. Health officials emphasized the urgent need for public policies to address non-substance-related behaviors, such as gambling and digital addictions, through community and institutional cooperation.
