Argentina advances accessibility through LSA training and AI technology

Various initiatives in Argentina are working to improve communication and accessibility for the deaf community through education and technology.

The Sagrado Corazón de Jesús school has launched a training program in Argentine Sign Language (LSA). The course is structured into four progressive cycles, lasting approximately four months each, designed to take students from basic fundamentals to autonomous communication. Notably, the classes are taught by deaf instructors accompanied by hearing interpreters to ensure linguistic authenticity. The program aims to break down communication barriers in essential daily activities such as medical consultations, shopping, and police reports.

In Saladillo, students and teachers from Escuela Secundaria N°5 have presented “Conect. AR con LSA,” a project aimed at promoting communicative accessibility. The initiative involves the development of an application that utilizes artificial intelligence to facilitate interaction between deaf and hearing individuals. By using a smartphone camera to track hand movements and facial expressions, the app translates signs into text or speech. The project has progressed to the provincial stage of the Science Fair.
