Argentina advances AMIA bombing case with trial in absentia

The Asociación Mutual Israelita Argentina (AMIA) has expressed satisfaction regarding significant judicial developments in the investigation of the July 18, 1994, terrorist attack. The Federal Chamber of Cassation has confirmed the constitutional validity of conducting trials in absentia under Law 27.784 for the AMIA case.

Simultaneously, Judge Daniel Rafecas of Federal Court No. 6 has ordered the indictment of seven Iranian citizens and one Lebanese citizen. These individuals are allegedly linked to the state structure of the Islamic Republic of Iran and the terrorist organization Hezbollah.

The 1994 attack resulted in 85 deaths and more than 300 injuries. AMIA stated that these legal milestones are decisive steps toward ending the impunity that has persisted for 32 years and fulfilling the state's international obligation to prosecute crimes against humanity.
