Argentina agricultural research focuses on soil health and carbon storage

Agricultural experts and researchers are focusing on soil preservation and carbon sequestration to ensure long-term productivity. During Agriculture Day, Dwayne Beck, professor emeritus at South Dakota State University, discussed the need to move beyond mere technology adoption toward designing systems that mimic natural ecosystems. He noted similarities between the South Dakota prairies and the Argentine Pampas, emphasizing that restoring biological diversity and root depth is essential for soil resilience.

In semiarid regions of Argentina, research conducted by INTA San Luis has identified alfalfa as a key tool for improving soil health. Studies near Villa Mercedes found that production systems incorporating this perennial crop accumulated 25% more soil organic carbon than continuous cropping systems. Researchers attribute this increase to the deeper and more persistent root systems of alfalfa, which contribute plant material to greater soil depths. Additionally, nitrous oxide emissions remained low in these systems due to the region's dry conditions.
