Argentina agroindustry maintains strong global market position
Argentina's agro-industrial sector remains a central pillar of the national economy, accounting for approximately 9% of the GDP and serving as the primary source of foreign currency. According to analysis from BBVA Research, the country has significantly expanded its productive capacity since the beginning of the 21st century through technological advancements and increased planting areas.
Key production growth figures include a 263% increase in maize, a 74% increase in soybeans, and a 10% increase in wheat. Argentina holds a dominant position in global markets, leading the world in soybean oil and meal exports and ranking as the third-largest exporter of maize. For the 2026/27 campaign, the four main agricultural complexes are projected to account for roughly 42% of total national exports, with total agro-industrial exports potentially exceeding $42 billion.
The sector is entering a new phase driven by precision agriculture and digitalization, with 47% of planted areas now monitored in real time. However, challenges remain, including global market volatility and the potential for an extraordinary “El Niño” phenomenon during the 2026-27 campaign, which could bring excessive rainfall and infrastructure difficulties despite potentially improving crop yields.
