Argentina and Chile close key Andean border passes due to weather

Authorities in Argentina and Chile have jointly suspended international traffic on the Cristo Redentor and Pehuenche crossing points, citing an approaching weather front that will bring heavy snowfall and hazardous conditions in the high Andes. The Cristo Redentor system will remain closed until further notice, while the Pehuenche crossing will operate only from 09:00 to 13:00 before being shut down for the same safety reasons.

The neighboring Agua Negra International Pass, which recorded a record season of 73,317 vehicle crossings, was also closed by a joint presidential delegation after on‑site assessments identified rock instability, landslides and the same adverse weather forecast. Officials emphasized that the closures are preventive measures to ensure the safety of travelers until the weather improves and the route can be safely reopened.
