Argentina and Chile launch Viekaren naval exercises in Beagle Channel

Argentina and Chile have launched the 25th edition of the Viekaren combined naval exercise in the Beagle Channel. The maneuvers aim to improve interoperability between the two navies and strengthen coordination for maritime emergencies, including search and rescue, environmental protection, and pollution control.

Argentina is participating with the ocean patrol vessel ARA Contraalmirante Cordero, as well as the fast boats ARA Indomito, ARA Clorinda, and ARA Baradero. Chile is contributing patrol vessels including the ARCHIsaza and ARCHIsbald.

The exercises take place amid diplomatic friction following comments made by the Chief of the General Staff of the Argentine Air Force, Brigadier General Gustavo Valverde. Valverde suggested a need for increased presence in the Strait of Magellan and the Drake Passage, referring to them as a “bioceanic key” between the Atlantic and Pacific. Chile has responded by asserting its indisputable sovereignty over the Strait of Magellan and intends to issue a formal diplomatic protest. The Argentine Foreign Ministry has distanced itself from the remarks, citing the 1881 Boundary Treaty and the 1984 Treaty of Peace and Friendship as the governing frameworks for bilateral relations.
