Argentina's Virtual Wallets Dominate Payments as Debt Delinquency Rises

Virtual wallets and instant‑transfer services now dominate Argentina's retail payments. The Central Bank of the Republic of Argentina reports that immediate transfers account for 65.6% of all operations in the National Payments System and that 61.4% of those transfers are made through the Uniform Virtual Key (CVU) wallet. By May 2026, 90 interoperable digital wallets were integrated into the Transferencias 3.0 scheme, and the volume of interoperable transfers grew more than 40% year‑over‑year. A Mastercard‑commissioned study found that 79% of Argentinians used a digital payment or fintech solution in the previous six months.

At the same time, credit delinquency linked to non‑bank financing has surged. An Equilibra report shows that 2.9 million Argentines are in arrears on loans obtained through virtual wallets and other non‑financial entities, representing over half of the 5.3 million who relied exclusively on such channels. The same analysis indicates that virtual wallets concentrate 66.5% of irrecoverable debt, amounting to about 2.3 trillion pesos, while the total number of people with non‑bank credit rose from 2.4 million in July 2024 to 5.8 million by May 2026.
