Argentina and Colombia name new heads of their national weather services
The Argentine government appointed Dr. Pedro Nicolás Di Nezio as the new director of the Servicio Meteorológico Nacional (SMN), effective 1 July 2026 for a four‑year term with subsecretary rank, replacing Antonio José Mauad. The decree, published in the official bulletin, tasks SMN with nationwide meteorological monitoring, forecasts and early‑warning alerts for sectors such as production, transport, civil defence and emergency management.
In Colombia, sources indicate that Andrés Herkrath Sanclemente is set to become director of the Instituto de Hidrología, Meteorología y Estudios Ambientales (Ideam). Herkrath, an environmental‑engineering graduate with experience at Meteorism, Elawa, PUR and Allcot, is expected to focus on strengthening the voluntary carbon market and overseeing monitoring of the upcoming El Niño phenomenon. The appointment has not yet been formalised.
Both appointments signal renewed leadership for the countries’ key climate‑monitoring institutions ahead of anticipated extreme weather events.
