Puebla launches free electronic IDs for 45,000 motorcyclists

Starting 15 July, the state government of Puebla will begin free distribution of 45,000 electronic identifiers for motorcyclists at 22 Secretaría de Movilidad y Transporte (SMT) modules located in the state’s Centros Integrales de Servicios. Each identifier incorporates a QR code, an RFID chip, an encrypted unique ID and three security layers, linking the device exclusively to a specific motorcycle and its rider; it cannot be shared, reused or placed on another vehicle.

The first phase is informational, with no fees and no penalties for non‑compliance. Applicants must present a valid driver’s licence and vehicle registration. The program is part of recent reforms to Puebla’s Mobility and Road‑Safety Law and aims to improve road safety, aid law‑enforcement identification, and protect personal data through an institutional validation system.
