Argentina and Mexico address suicide crisis with new measures
In Argentina, Senator Malena Galmarini introduced a bill to declare a two‑year public emergency on mental health and suicide prevention in a province. The proposal would establish a provincial awareness month from September 10 to October 10 each year, allocate resources for early detection of at‑risk individuals, strengthen psychological and psychiatric services, coordinate with municipalities and civil‑society groups, and allow budget adjustments to support the measures.
In Mexico, the Instituto Municipal de Prevención y Atención a la Salud (IMPAS) reported that more than 300 suicide attempts were intercepted in June and that its 24‑hour hotline has received over 3,000 calls this year. More than 300 survivors have accepted follow‑up psychological care, and the agency is urging people to seek help early to prevent further attempts.
