Argentina and Mexico confront new press‑freedom disputes

In Argentina, a group of opposition deputies presented a resolution calling presidential spokesperson Adrián Ravier to appear before the Chamber of Deputies’ Freedom of Expression Commission. The lawmakers seek details on the government’s recent restrictions on journalists’ access to the Casa Rosada, the cancellation of accreditations between 23 April and 4 May, and the future policy for press accreditation and press conferences. The initiative follows a complaint filed by the Argentine Press Forum (FOPEA) to the Inter‑American Commission on Human Rights and an amparo filed by major newspaper publishers demanding restoration of access.

In Mexico’s northern state of Coahuila, Governor Manolo Jiménez Salinas pledged that the authorities will apply the full force of the law against those who assaulted journalists. The state prosecutor will pursue the complaints filed by the reporters, and Jiménez characterised the attacks as reactions of frustrated opposition parties following recent elections, stressing a zero‑tolerance stance toward violations of freedom of expression.
