Argentina and Uruguay report rising femicide cases in 2025‑2026
In Argentina's Córdoba province, the National Register of Femicides recorded ten women killed in 2025, lowering the provincial rate to 0.50 per 100,000 women – a drop from 0.85 the year before. Victims averaged 38.7 years old; several faced substance abuse, prostitution, or inter‑provincial migration. Perpetrators, known to the victims as ex‑partners, spouses or clients, were primarily Argentine, with two Paraguayan and one Uruguayan nationals. Most killings occurred inside homes, using firearms, knives or physical force.
In Uruguay, a 19‑year‑old woman was fatally stabbed in San José Department, becoming the eighth femicide recorded in the country in 2026. Police say the suspect, a 21‑year‑old former classmate who lived in the same neighbourhood, had no prior relationship or reported abuse with the victim. He was detained after the attack. Official data show 33 women were murdered in Uruguay between January and October 2025, with 58 % linked to gender‑based violence.
