Argentina and Uruguay See Major Public Education Funding Reductions

A report by the University of Buenos Aires shows that Argentina's education and culture budget fell by 47.7% in the 2024‑2025 biennium. The decline was deepest in university transfers, which dropped 5.4% year‑on‑year, student scholarships cut by 42.5%, and the management of educational policies fell 49.5%. The National Literacy Plan was the only program to increase its execution.

A separate study of Uruguay's public education spending in 2024 finds that the state transfers the equivalent of about 20% of beneficiary households' income through school funding. The financing is progressive, lowering the Gini coefficient by 0.03 points, with the strongest redistributive impact in early and primary education where coverage is broad.
