Argentina and Uruguay sign open skies aviation agreement

Argentina and Uruguay have signed an “open skies” air services agreement to liberalize commercial aviation between the two nations. The agreement, signed in Montevideo by Foreign Ministers Mario Lubetkin and Pablo Quirno, aims to modernize passenger and cargo transport by removing bureaucratic obstacles.

Under the new regulatory framework, airlines will have the authority to determine flight frequencies and capacities based on market demand and commercial considerations. The agreement also provides greater flexibility regarding routes and facilitates inter-company cooperation, such as codeshare agreements, which allow airlines to market flights operated by other carriers.

The measure is intended to boost regional connectivity, stimulate tourism, and strengthen bilateral trade. By fostering competition and reducing operational delays, the agreement seeks to expand the current flight offerings, which are currently concentrated among major carriers like Aerolíneas Argentinas.
