Argentina and U.S. strengthen strategic and financial ties

Argentina and the United States are strengthening their strategic alliance, impacting both regional sovereignty claims and financial cooperation. Argentine Defense Minister Carlos Presti stated that the partnership with the U.S. bolsters Argentina's position regarding its sovereignty claim over the Malvinas Islands. Presti emphasized that the claim remains diplomatic and peaceful, noting that the government is mindful of Donald Trump's willingness to mediate in potential conflicts.

To increase presence in the South Atlantic, Argentina plans to begin construction of an integrated naval base in Ushuaia in January. The project is estimated to cost $450 million and will be executed over four years.

On the economic front, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent defended a $20 billion currency swap agreement with Argentina, describing the nation as a “U.S. ally.” Bessent testified before the House Financial Services Committee that the financial assistance was designed to protect American capital, noting that Argentina used a portion of the swap to reimburse the U.S. for dollars used in previous currency interventions. The Central Bank of Argentina reported paying over $17 million in interest to the U.S. Treasury related to these operations.
