IPS guarantees pension payments amid Ueno Bank crisis

The Instituto de Previsión Social (IPS) has assured that pension and retirement payments, including the annual bonus (aguinaldo), will be made on schedule despite the intervention of Ueno Bank. The institution reported that it maintains approximately US$ 355 million in investments in the bank, including savings certificates and financial bonds acquired during 2024 and 2025.

IPS officials clarified that pension disbursements are funded by employer and employee contributions rather than financial investments, ensuring that the bank's liquidity issues will not delay payments. To support the more than 32,000 retirees who previously received benefits through Ueno Bank, the IPS is initiating procedures to migrate these beneficiaries to other banking entities and will communicate the new details shortly.

Legal and administrative actions are being prepared to recover the invested funds. The IPS considers itself a privileged creditor in the asset recovery process. Additionally, the institution is working to strengthen internal controls and coordination between departments to improve its response to audits and regulatory observations.
