Argentina police dismantle baby formula counterfeit network

Argentine authorities have dismantled a criminal network involved in the distribution of counterfeit and adulterated baby formula. Following a series of 14 raids across the City of Buenos Aires and various districts in the Buenos Aires province, including Quilmes, Lanús, Ezeiza, San Vicente, Cañuelas, and Roque Pérez, the Federal Police seized more than 500 units of the product.

The investigation, overseen by the Federal Court No. 2 of Lomas de Zamora, was initiated after parents reported adverse health effects in their children. The counterfeit product was an imitation of SanCor Bebé Advance 1, intended for infants aged 0 to 6 months. Laboratory analysis by SENASA revealed that the formula contained Aflatoxin M1 at concentrations exceeding the legal limit by more than six times, posing a severe toxicological risk to infants.

Five individuals were identified in connection with the operation, including two Argentine nationals, two Chinese nationals, and one Paraguayan national. The counterfeit goods were being sold through supermarkets, local shops, and various digital platforms. Authorities noted several physical discrepancies in the fake packaging, such as typographical errors like “Adventencia” and “oelico,” as well as 3D-printed measuring spoons that differed from the original product.
