Argentina begins replacing FAL rifles with Israeli ARAD models
Argentina has begun the process of replacing its long-standing FAL rifles with new Israeli-made ARAD-5 and ARAD-7 models. The Ministry of Defense announced the arrival of the first batch of over 10,000 units, marking the end of the FAL's 66-year service history within the Argentine Armed Forces.
The ARAD-5 models are designated for the Navy, while the ARAD-7 models, which share the same caliber as the outgoing FAL, will be used by the Army and Air Force. These new weapons are lighter, modular, and equipped with MEPRO M-5 electro-optical red dot sights. The transition is expected to be completed over the next two years.
While the modernization represents a significant technological upgrade, the acquisition has sparked debate regarding industrial strategy. Unlike other nations that secured assembly or manufacturing licenses with Israel Weapon Industries (IWI), Argentina has opted for a direct state-to-state purchase without local production rights, potentially deepening its industrial dependence on foreign suppliers.
