Argentina biodiesel industry faces uncertainty amid Senate delay
The Argentine biodiesel industry faces significant uncertainty as the Senate has postponed the vote on a new biofuels law. The proposed legislation, which includes increasing mandatory blending mandates for biodiesel from 7.5% to 10%, has caused friction between government blocs and producing provinces.
Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are particularly concerned. The Chamber of Regional SME Biofuel Producers (CEPREB) has warned that the law, promoted by the administration, could lead to the bankruptcy of smaller plants and the loss of local jobs. These producers argue that the new framework favors large integrated companies while stripping protections from the SMEs that currently supply 70% of the market.
Simultaneously, the sector is navigating international regulatory shifts. While the European Union has recently stepped back from classifying soy as a high-risk raw material regarding deforestation, export stability remains a key concern for producers centered in Rosario.
