Argentina birth rate drops 46% in nine years

Argentina has experienced a significant decline in birth rates over the last nine years. According to available data, live births dropped from 770,040 in 2015 to 413,135 in 2024, representing a reduction of approximately 46%.

Between 2023 and 2024 alone, the number of births fell by roughly 10%. This downward trend is part of a sustained demographic shift rather than a temporary fluctuation. The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) reports that Argentina's total fertility rate is currently around 1.2 children per woman, which is significantly below the 2.1 rate required for population replacement.

During the XXII Argentine Congress of Reproductive Medicine, specialists noted that this new demographic landscape necessitates earlier discussions regarding reproductive planning and fertility. While options such as egg cryopreservation exist for those wishing to postpone motherhood, experts emphasize that these methods do not guarantee pregnancy and are heavily dependent on the age at which the eggs are obtained.
