The Mexican government has successfully recovered 5.8 million US dollars linked to the corruption and money laundering network of former Secretary of Public Security, Genaro García Luna, and the Weinberg family. The funds, received on August 25, 2026, were obtained through a civil lawsuit in Florida following the liquidation of 12 properties and the recovery of a bond.

President Claudia Sheinbaum announced that these resources, totaling approximately 100 million pesos, will be dedicated to improving schools in the Mountain region of Guerrero, specifically targeting upper secondary and higher education to address significant regional needs.

Omar Reyes Colmenares, head of the Financial Intelligence Unit (UIF), detailed that the investigation uncovered a scheme operating between 2008 and 2018, involving over 403 million dollars in public contracts through shell companies and inflated pricing. While this recovery marks a significant milestone, authorities noted that the liquidation of additional assets in favor of the Mexican state is still pending.
