Bookstore sectors in Argentina and Mexico face economic shifts

Independent bookstores in Argentina are facing a severe crisis, prompting the Federation of Argentine Bookstores, Stationery Stores and Related Activities (FALPA) to declare a national ‘bookstore emergency’. A survey of 1,200 independent businesses reveals a 41.5% drop in real turnover and a 25% decrease in the volume of books sold between 2023 and 2026. This decline is compounded by a 31.1% increase in operating costs, including rising rents and utilities. The Fundación El Libro has expressed deep concern, noting that the closure of these local spaces threatens cultural diversity and access to reading.

In Mexico, the government is implementing measures to support the publishing ecosystem. The Secretary of Culture, Claudia Curiel de Icaza, announced that the 2027 Economic Package includes a proposal for a 0% VAT rate for bookstores, a long-standing industry demand. This measure is expected to benefit the sector by approximately 200 million pesos annually. Additionally, the government will launch a 50-million-peso call for tenders on September 21 to purchase books for the National Network of Public Libraries, specifically targeting medium and independent Mexican publishers to strengthen the book supply chain.
