Argentina braced for extreme cold, snow and strong winds in Patagonia

An intense thermal anticyclone will drive a polar front across Argentina, bringing extreme cold, heavy rain and snowfall to Patagonia from the weekend of June 20‑21. The storm system is expected to generate wind gusts of up to 90 km/h, especially in northern Santa Cruz and Chubut, and produce snow at mid‑elevations and higher in Neuquén, Río Negro and Chubut provinces.

The National Meteorological Service has issued yellow alerts for strong winds and heavy precipitation in the central Patagonian Andes, with potential accumulations of 20‑40 mm of rain and several centimeters of snow. The cold front will then advance northward, bringing widespread frosts to the Pampas and isolated rain showers to Mendoza, San Luis, Córdoba and parts of the NOA region. Temperatures are forecast to drop sharply, with the coldest period anticipated in the first half of the coming week.
