Argentina celebrates Día del Colectivo anniversary

Argentina celebrates ‘Día del Colectivo’ on September 24, marking the anniversary of the first collective transport trip in the country, which took place in 1928.

The tradition originated in Buenos Aires when a group of taxi drivers, facing competition from trams and buses and a decline in passengers, began offering shared rides. By carrying multiple passengers to the same destination and splitting the cost, they created ‘taxi-colectivos,’ which eventually evolved into the modern ‘colectivo’ system.

The inaugural service on September 24, 1928, reportedly traveled from Primera Junta through Plaza Flores. This milestone was officially recognized in the City of Buenos Aires through Law 1475 in 2004, honoring the birth of this essential mode of urban mobility.
