Argentina celebrates Immigrant Day with cultural events

Various communities across Argentina are holding events to commemorate Immigrant Day, celebrating the diverse cultural roots that have shaped the nation's identity.

In Caleta Olivia, the municipality organized a meeting at the El Mirador Library to share historical documentation and personal stories. This initiative, supported by San Juan Bosco University, aims to preserve the collective memory of European immigration in Patagonia.

In Bariloche, the Association of Friends of European-Argentine Collectivities hosted a cultural gathering at Puerto San Carlos. The event featured traditional music and dances from Scotland, Chile, Ireland, Hungary, Bolivia, Spain, Germany, and Russia.

Tandil's Union of Collectivities held a ceremony to honor the contributions of immigrant groups, specifically noting the Croatian and Montenegrin stonecutters who were foundational to the region's industry. Similarly, Berisso is celebrating its 49th annual Immigrant Festival, a long-standing tradition that includes a parade known as the ‘Desembarco de los inmigrantes’.

In the province of Buenos Aires, several towns such as Pigüé, Berisso, and Colonia San José are recognized for their distinct immigrant heritages. These celebrations trace back to a 1812 decree intended to encourage immigration to the United Provinces of the Río de la Plata.
