Argentina Chamber of Deputies advances rural vandalism bill

The Argentine Chamber of Deputies has advanced a bill to incorporate the figure of ‘rural vandalism’ into the Penal Code. The project, promoted by Deputy Martín Ardohain, seeks to penalize unauthorized entry into rural properties with prison terms ranging from one month to one year. Additionally, it proposes penalties of two to eight years and fines for those who damage agricultural production, infrastructure, or livestock.

The majority report received 41 signatures, supported by blocks including La Libertad Avanza, PRO, and UCR. However, the initiative faces opposition from Unión por la Patria and the Frente de Izquierda, who have presented minority reports criticizing the proposal as potentially ineffective or redundant. The agricultural organization CARBAP has expressed support for the measure, citing the need for greater security for rural families and production.

In separate legislative developments, a municipal councilor in La Libertad Avanza criticized a local project for municipal worker debt assistance, comparing it to the privatization of debt during the military dictatorship. Meanwhile, in Catamarca, the La Libertad Avanza block criticized the ruling party for a lack of quorum that prevented a legislative session.
