Argentina Chamber of Deputies approves harsher penalties for rural vandalism
The Argentine Chamber of Deputies has granted partial sanction to a bill aimed at toughening penalties for rural vandalism. The initiative, sponsored by National Deputy Martín Ardohain, seeks to amend the Penal Code to include specific offenses related to the destruction of crops, silobags, fences, machinery, and agricultural infrastructure.
The project passed with 162 votes in favor, 77 against, and one abstention. Proposed sanctions include prison terms ranging from one month to eight years for illegal entry into rural establishments, and two to eight years of imprisonment plus fines of up to twelve times the value of the damage for those who destroy production elements. Public incitement to commit these crimes could also carry sentences of two to six years.
The Confederation of Rural Associations of Buenos Aires and La Pampa (CARBAP) welcomed the legislative progress, stating that “the countryside cannot have less protection than any other area.” The organization emphasized that the destruction of agricultural assets causes significant economic losses and threatens the security of families working in the sector. The bill now moves to the Senate for further deliberation.
