Argentina coach says Messi chose team over personal records in World Cup 2026 win over Jordan

Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni explained that star forward Lionel Messi voluntarily gave up the chance to improve his personal statistics in the group‑stage match against Jordan at the 2026 World Cup. Scaloni said Messi could have played the full 90 minutes and boosted his record, but he preferred to let other squad members gain minutes, reflecting a team‑first attitude.

Scaloni also praised the contribution of forwards Lautaro Martínez, Julián Álvarez and Lisandro Sicú, and highlighted the importance of balance in the attacking options. The team secured a victory that kept them on top of the group and ensured qualification.

During the pre‑match press conference, Scaloni honored veteran Argentine journalist Makaya Márquez, confirming that Messi would start on the bench with the possibility of entering in the second half. The remarks were made as Argentina entered the match having already won their first two games.

The coach’s comments underline Messi’s leadership role beyond on‑field performance and illustrate Argentina’s strategy of rotating players while maintaining competitive edge in the tournament.
