Argentina commemorates Ricardo Rojas on National Culture Day, July 29

Argentina observes July 29 as National Culture Day, a holiday established by a 1982 presidential decree to honor the memory of writer, politician and historian Ricardo Rojas. Rojas, born in San Miguel de Tucumán in 1882, pursued journalism and literature, earned numerous honorary doctorates and authored the multivolume *Historia de la Literatura Argentina*.

Rojas founded the first Argentine literature chair at the University of Buenos Aires, served as rector, and held the post of Argentine ambassador to Peru. The decree cites his “polifacética y honda personalidad intelectual” and his role in preserving and promoting the nation’s cultural identity. The day is marked across the country with events celebrating Argentine theatre, literature and the broader cultural heritage he championed.
