Argentina's August 17 San Martín Holiday Creates Long Weekend

The Argentine government confirmed that Monday 17 August 2026 will be a national holiday commemorating the Paso a la Inmortalidad of General José de San Martín. Because the date falls on a Monday, it creates the only three‑day weekend in August, spanning Saturday 15 to Monday 17. The holiday is classified as “transferable” but will not be moved since it already aligns with a weekday.

Labor law requires that employees who work on the holiday receive double pay, while those who do not work are paid their regular wage. The extended break is expected to generate a noticeable surge in domestic tourism, with many families planning short trips or visits to relatives during the long weekend. The same period also includes the Día del Niño on Sunday 16 August, giving families an uninterrupted four‑day holiday stretch.
