Argentina confirms first chikungunya case of 2026-2027 season

Argentina has confirmed its first case of chikungunya for the 2026-2027 season in the Orán department of Salta province. According to the National Epidemiological Bulletin (BEN), there are currently four other probable cases in the departments of Orán, General José de San Martín, and Anta. Additionally, 80 cases remain under study, while 17 notifications have been ruled out.

Health authorities have recommended intensified epidemiological surveillance and active case searching among individuals presenting with non-specific acute febrile syndromes to detect new transmission foci early. The disease is transmitted primarily by Aedes mosquitoes, the same vector responsible for dengue and Zika.

Regarding dengue, the bulletin reported no new cases in the country, maintaining a low-risk scenario with the interruption of autochthonous viral transmission. Since the start of the 2026-2027 season, 480 suspected dengue cases have been notified, with only two confirmed in individuals with travel history to Brazil.
