Argentina confronts industrial job losses and a push for 'social capitalism' amid resource boom

Argentina’s energy and mining sectors, highlighted by the Vaca Muerta gas field and large lithium and copper reserves, are expanding rapidly. A recent study found that since late 2023 the country has lost about 175,000 industrial jobs, with no comparable job growth in the expanding resource sectors, raising fears of a Dutch‑disease‑type slowdown.

At the same time, political analyst Andrés Vallone is urging a fourth stage of Argentine democracy built on a "social capitalism" model. He proposes blending market‑driven investment and fiscal balance with state‑provided education, infrastructure and labour‑focused justice, aiming to turn macro‑economic stability into broad‑based development.

Both discussions highlight the challenge of converting the resource boom into sustainable, well‑paid employment and a more diversified economy.
