Argentina warns of youth mental‑health risks from online betting during World Cup 2026

Health specialists in Argentina say the 2026 World Cup is driving a surge in online betting among adolescents, raising concerns about mental‑health impacts. Advertisements tied to the tournament appear on television, stadiums and social‑media influencers, encouraging young people to place bets from smartphones in real time – a practice described as “double‑screen” betting.

Experts in the province of Tucumán highlighted signs families should watch for, including irritability, sleep disturbances, repeated requests for money and concealment of phone use. The provincial addiction‑treatment director warned that constant exposure to betting promotions normalises the behavior and can lead to compulsive gambling, a recognised pathology.

Authorities are urging early detection, dialogue with youths and preventive programs in schools, clubs and media. Tucumán’s health system has expanded counseling and treatment facilities, and officials call for stronger regulation of digital gambling platforms to protect minors during the World Cup and beyond.
