Argentina University March: Clashes and Legal Fines over Funding

The Fifth Federal University March in Argentina saw significant clashes between protesters and security forces near the National Congress in Buenos Aires. Students, teachers, and unions marched to demand the implementation of the University Funding Law, which aims to restore budgets and update salaries and scholarships.

Security forces utilized tear gas, water cannons, and rubber bullets to disperse crowds, resulting in at least 31 detainees, including two minors. The clashes also left several security personnel from Gendarmería Nacional and Prefectura Naval Argentina injured. Tear gas reportedly entered the annex of the Chamber of Deputies, affecting legislators and staff.

In a related legal development, Judge Martín Cormick imposed a daily fine of $100,000 on Chief of Staff Diego Santilli for the government's failure to comply with a court injunction regarding salary and scholarship updates. While the administration has argued that funding sources must be identified by Congress, university authorities and the National Interuniversity Council (CIN) maintain that the government is legally obligated to fulfill the existing law. The government is currently evaluating potential modifications to the 2027 budget to address these funding demands.
