Argentina considers new law to support adoption of children with disabilities

In Argentina, a new legislative project named after Estefanía is awaiting congressional review to improve the adoption process for children with disabilities. The bill aims to reduce waiting periods and provide comprehensive support to families during the bonding, guardianship, and post-adoption stages.

The initiative follows the experience of Estefanía, a woman with spina bifida who adopted Lionel, a child with complex health needs including a tracheotomy and gastric feeding. Their bonding process lasted two years due to medical evaluations and a lack of suitable facilities. Since the adoption, Lionel has shown significant health improvements, including overcoming malnutrition and regaining the ability to eat orally and speak.
