Argentina considers submarine purchase from France and Germany

The Argentine Navy is evaluating proposals to acquire three new submarines to restore its underwater defense capabilities, which were lost following the 2017 sinking of the ARA San Juan. Admiral Marcelo Dalle Nogare, Chief of the Joint Staff, confirmed that the military is considering offers from France’s Naval Group, featuring Scorpène-class submarines, and Germany’s ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS), which has offered the Type 209NG project.

France and Germany have reportedly offered to finance the acquisition in full through installment plans, though official government confirmation of these financial arrangements is pending. The estimated cost of the program is slightly over €3 billion (US$3.3 billion). The 2027 draft national budget includes a US$2.3 billion loan authorization for three conventional submarines to be stationed at the Mar del Plata Naval Base.

The potential sale has drawn criticism from British politicians. Reform UK MP Andrew Rosindell expressed concern that the deal could shift the balance of power in the South Atlantic and undermine the security of the Falkland Islands. A preliminary decision on the submarine program is expected during 2026, with deliveries potentially occurring approximately six years after a contract is signed.
