Argentina economic indicators show rising country risk and mixed consumer confidence

Argentina is experiencing significant financial volatility, with the country risk indicator climbing above 700 points. This surge, driven by a decline in sovereign bond prices on Wall Street, reflects investor concerns regarding economic growth and the ability to meet upcoming debt obligations, particularly those due in 2027. Analysts attribute the rising risk to a combination of international factors, such as high oil prices, and domestic weakness, including an economic contraction of 1.7% year-on-year in August.

In contrast to the financial market tension, the Consumer Confidence Index (ICC) showed a slight monthly improvement of 0.81% in October, reaching 41.52 points. However, this recovery is uneven across the country and different socioeconomic groups. While confidence rose by 6.77% in the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires (CABA), it decreased in the Greater Buenos Aires (GBA) and the Interior regions. Furthermore, high-income households saw a confidence increase of approximately 2%, whereas low-income households experienced a 1.30% decline.

Finance Secretary Federico Furiase noted that the current country risk is “decoupled and punished,” defending the government's fiscal balance and structural reforms. He also mentioned the possibility of utilizing China swap funds to meet debt obligations.
