Argentina country risk hits 2026 high of 641 basis points
Argentina's country risk index, calculated by JP Morgan, has climbed to 641 basis points, marking its highest level in 2026 and a 25.2% increase throughout September. This surge coincides with a decline in Argentine stocks listed on Wall Street and a rise in the official dollar exchange rate.
The official dollar at Banco Nación reached a new nominal record, trading at 1,500 pesos for purchase and 1,550 pesos for sale. Meanwhile, the S&P Merval index fell 2.1%, and major banking ADRs, including BBVA and Grupo Financiero Galicia, experienced significant losses.
Financial instability is further evidenced by the decline in dollar-denominated bonds, such as the AL35D, which has dropped over 10% this month. The Ministry of Economy previously suspended a 5,000 million dollar bond placement due to soaring yields, highlighting challenges in local financing and reserve accumulation.
