Argentina country risk hits 12-month high amid market volatility

Argentina's country risk index, measured by JPMorgan, experienced significant volatility, reaching an intraday peak of 710 basis points—its highest level since October 2025. While the indicator saw a morning surge, it later moderated to close between 672 and 684 points.

The escalation follows a period of rising pressure on Argentine sovereign bonds and local equities. In the international market, factors such as rising oil prices and expectations of restrictive monetary policies from the U.S. Federal Reserve have contributed to investor caution regarding emerging markets.

Government officials, including Economy Minister Luis Caputo, have attributed the increase to global uncertainty and external factors rather than domestic policy failures. Despite the rise in risk, some analysts note that the country maintains solid fiscal fundamentals, including a primary surplus and accumulating central bank reserves. However, market participants remain focused on political uncertainty ahead of future elections and the sustainability of the current economic program.
