Argentina Court Orders Child Support Payments Through Electricity Bills

A family court in Rosario, Santa Fe, approved an unusual enforcement measure for unpaid child support. The judge ordered the provincial electricity provider, Empresa Provincial de la Energía (EPE), to add the support amount to the delinquent parent's monthly power bill, retain the funds, and transfer them to a judicial account. Failure to pay the bill could lead to service suspension. The ruling follows previous attempts—bank account seizures, asset liens, and driver’s license suspensions—that proved ineffective.

In a separate Argentine case, a family court in Luis Beltrán terminated a child support obligation after the beneficiary, a young police officer in Río Negro, secured stable employment and income. Lawyer Roxana Zapata explained that financial independence, not merely reaching a certain age, ends the duty, though support may continue up to age 21 or 25 under specific circumstances. Both decisions highlight the courts' focus on practical enforcement and individualized assessment of child support obligations.
