Argentina Court Orders Heirs to Repay 2009 Loan with Accrued Interest

The civil and commercial court in Bahía Blanca ruled that the heirs of a man who died in 2024 must settle the debt arising from a personal loan taken in 2009. The loan of $9,000 was guaranteed by the Fondo de Garantías de Buenos Aires (FO.GA.BA.), which paid $6,750 to Banco Provincia when the borrower defaulted. The judge, María Fernanda Arzuaga, ordered the heirs to repay the guarantee amount plus nearly 17 years of judicial interest and procedural costs. Liability is limited to the value of the estate; the heirs’ personal assets are protected. The final amount will be calculated during the liquidation phase, but expert estimates suggest the debt could ultimately range between $10 million and $30 million depending on the applicable interest rates.
