Maickel Villegas convicted in Ronald Ojeda kidnapping and murder case

A Chilean court has issued its first guilty verdict following an oral trial in the case of the kidnapping and murder of Venezuelan former military officer Ronald Ojeda. Maickel David Villegas Rodríguez, a member of the 'Los Piratas' cell of the transnational criminal organization Tren de Aragua, was found guilty as a material author of the crime.

Villegas, who was extradited from Costa Rica in November 2024, was found to have conducted surveillance for several hours prior to the February 2024 incident. Evidence presented by the prosecution showed he also assisted in the aftermath of the crime. While investigations have explored potential political motives involving high-ranking Venezuelan officials, the court noted that a political motive was not established during this specific trial.

The sentencing for Villegas is scheduled to be announced on October 15. The case remains a significant focus for Chilean authorities, as 32 individuals have been identified in connection with the crime, with 26 currently in custody.
