Argentina creates biodegradable film to preserve beef

Researchers from Argentina's National Institute of Agricultural Technology (INTA) and the Institute of Investigations in Science and Technology of Materials (Intema) have developed a compostable film that can replace conventional plastic packaging for beef. The film is made from biodegradable polymers derived from starches and algae, and under laboratory conditions it degrades into biomass, carbon dioxide and water without leaving residues.

In tests, beef cuts wrapped in the new film were stored for seven days in refrigerated, aerated conditions that mimic supermarket displays. The biodegradable packaging performed comparably to standard PVC film, maintaining color, moisture, microbial safety and overall quality throughout the trial. The researchers say the material meets the high standards required for beef preservation while significantly reducing single‑use plastic waste.

The development aims to support a more sustainable meat industry in Argentina by offering processors and packagers an eco‑friendly alternative that does not compromise product safety or shelf life.
