Argentina cuts national funding for Remediar medicine program

The Argentine Ministry of Health has announced it will cease transferring national funds to provinces for the Remediar program, a decision driven by federal budget adjustments. For approximately 20 years, Remediar has provided essential medicines to an estimated 19 million people across the country, primarily those without private health insurance who rely on public hospitals and health centers.

National officials informed the Association of Ombudsmen of the Argentine Republic (ADPRA) that the responsibility for ensuring the continuity of ongoing medical treatments will now fall to provincial and municipal health systems. While the government is developing a new prioritized list of medicines (vademecum) using a Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) model—which evaluates epidemiological, sanitary, efficacy, safety, and cost-effectiveness factors—there are currently no guarantees that patients with existing treatments can continue them without interruption.

In provinces such as Formosa, the program previously reached approximately 340,000 people. The shift in funding has raised significant concerns among ombudsmen regarding the ability of local jurisdictions to maintain access to vital medications for vulnerable populations.
