Argentina Deputy Karen Reichardt advances animal shelter bill after TV clash with Matilda Blanco
Libertarian deputy Karen Reichardt presented a bill in the Argentine Congress to create a national regime for the regulation, funding, inspection and control of animal shelters, breeding facilities and pension homes. The proposal, filed under expediente 3401‑D‑2026, is the fourth initiative she has submitted since taking office in 2025 and seeks to replace outright bans with a regulated framework.
Reichardt appeared on the television program LAM, hosted by Ángel de Brito, where she was confronted by fashion critic Matilda Blanco. Blanco accused the legislator of trying to legalise animal breeding, saying, “Pedile disculpas vos, a los animales, a los 18 millones de animales que hay en las calles.” Reichardt responded that prohibition without regulation drives the industry underground and pledged to send a legal notice to Blanco within 48 hours. She emphasized that “prohibir no es la solución; prohibir sin regular solo empuja a la clandestinidad y deja a los animales aún más desprotegidos.”
