Argentina designates five Latin American groups as terrorist organizations

The Argentine government, led by President Javier Milei, has officially designated five criminal and guerrilla organizations from Mexico, Colombia, and Ecuador as terrorist entities. The decision was formalized through Joint Resolution 5/2026, signed by the Ministers of Security and Foreign Affairs, and published in the Official Gazette.

The designated groups include Mexico’s Sinaloa Cartel and La Nueva Familia Michoacana; Colombia’s National Liberation Army (ELN) and the FARC-EP (specifically the GAO-R FARC-EP and the Central Staff/EMC); and Ecuador’s Los Tiguerones gang, including its Los Fénix and Los Igualitos factions.

By adding these groups to the Public Registry of Persons and Entities Linked to Acts of Terrorism and their Financing (RePET), the government enables immediate financial restrictions, such as the freezing of assets. The measure aims to strengthen the detection of terrorism financing and facilitate intelligence sharing with international authorities. The administration justified the move based on classified intelligence reports citing the transnational nature, operational capacity, and regional expansion of these groups as threats to national security.
