San Miguel de Tucumán to Demolish Historic Pedestrian Bridge Over Risk of Collapse

The municipal government of San Miguel de Tucumán will dismantle the nearly 50‑year‑old pedestrian bridge on Avenida Benjamín Aráoz after technical reports flagged critical cracks, severe corrosion and loss of support stability. The risk‑of‑collapse assessment, issued by civil defence and municipal engineers, led officials to schedule the demolition for the night of June 27, using two 80‑ton cranes operated by the contractor Tensolite. Traffic on the main artery will be rerouted in two stages, with the southern direction closed at 22:00 and the northern side remaining shut until the bridge and its side ramps are removed and the site cleared – a process estimated at six hours. Vehicular flow is expected to resume on Saturday, while pedestrian access will stay restricted for five days until full debris removal is completed.
