Argentina removes trade attaché from its Madrid embassy

President Javier Milei of Argentina dismissed Marcelo Alejandro Nimo, the specialized attaché for Investment Promotion and International Trade at the Argentine embassy in Spain, through Decree 588/2026 signed by Milei, Economy Minister Luis Caputo and Foreign Minister Pablo Quirno. The move ended an internal dispute with ambassador Wenceslao Bunge Saravia over the loss of an office where Nimo met businesspeople, which he had described as “symbolic for Milei’s supporters”. Nimo said his departure was a “personal decision, agreed with the government”. A lawyer and former aide to ex‑president Carlos Menem, Nimo was appointed in August 2024 and is not a career diplomat. Ambassador Bunge, a former head of Credit Suisse’s Spanish unit, was tasked with smoothing relations between Milei and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez amid ongoing tensions. No replacement for the post has been announced.
