Argentina expands mass surveillance under Milei administration
Amnesty International has issued a report titled ‘Sensing the Surveillance State’, alleging that the government of President Javier Milei in Argentina has significantly expanded its mass surveillance capabilities. The organization claims that institutional reforms, implemented through various decrees and resolutions, have strengthened the state's ability to conduct intelligence gathering, profiling, and reprisals.
According to the report, the National Security Ministry spent at least $1.2 million between 2024 and 2025 to acquire surveillance technologies. These acquisitions include facial recognition software—specifically a license from Clearview AI—social media monitoring tools, drones, and aerial surveillance technology. Amnesty International asserts that these tools are being used to target political dissent, monitor protesters, and harass marginalized groups, creating a ‘chilling effect’ on freedom of expression and assembly.
The report highlights that these measures are part of a broader trend of ‘digital authoritarianism,’ where technology is integrated into state control infrastructure to monitor both physical and digital spaces.
